SAIL

I'd spent a lot of time at sea in the past. I'd take any position on a boat if it meant being in the ocean. But when I was summoned to this one, my heart sank in disbelief. Sure, life had given me lemons in the past and I'd turned it into the sweetest lemonade you'd ever taste, but it rarely handed me a whole lemon pie. It wasn't real. I couldn't be true. It was something that in my heart, I felt destined to do, with every ounce of my being...
CALIFORNIA (Part 2)

As soon as we came down the mountain, the familiarity of the whizzing traffic and fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants lane changes brought back a feeling of 'home away from home', for me. I love driving the freeways here. Get on and go, or get the hell out of the way.

...We got in the car and I decided to set the GPS on my phone. "A-M-O-E-B....." "Let's just drive straight to this place and then park near there and walk around".
As soon as you pull off the highway into downtown Hollywood, you immediately see the Capitol Records building. We drove through and parked a half-block from Amoeba Music...

We’d been packing for two weeks, shoving everything we owned into an 8x10’ storage unit in Cocoa Beach. On the last evening of packing, after a hard day in the sun, out of town, judging a surf contest, here we were, scrambling...

I awoke as my ears began to pop. Brandon was staring out the window. “Look… volcanos.” I peeked out and could see Lake Managua and a beautiful setting of lush green hills and volcanos. It made me think of the way Hawaii must look when you land there by plane. As we got closer to the ground I could see coconut palms and what was clearly a ‘suburb’ of Managua, with homes made from...

When we arrived at a small motel, a man in a nice white collared shirt came out to help us with our bags. The only money that I had to tip the driver was a $10 bill. I was sure he’d be excited about that, although that was nearly the last of our cash. The motel attendant took us to a beautiful room with a big, open window which led out into a tropical foyer. There were paintings on the walls of the volcanos and the national bird. We had a big bathroom and a shower with warm water. We’d just arrived in paradise. Of course, we had no idea why. We were supposed to be going to the surf camp...
